Carmell, 7, is a bright, smart, outgoing, and very lovable girl who lives in Chicago. She has a life-threatening medical condition, but she does not let that put a damper in her vivacious spirit. Her all-time favorite thing to do is play.

"She can sit in her room and play by herself for hours," her mother Monique said. "You would think there were 10 kids in her room, but it's just her playing and talking to her dolls."

Before Carmell was born, doctors diagnosed her with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a rare heart defect that causes underdevelopment in the left side of the heart. Carmell's mother says the little princess doesn't even think about her illness since she has always lived with it. Her mother also has made it her mission to give her daughter the best childhood a girl can have, free from the worries and cares that comes with having a life-threatening illness.

Carmell wished for a princess room, surprising her mom who thought she would chose a trip since she enjoyed their recent family vacation to the Bahamas.

"She's always wanted her own room," her mother said. This was obvious as Carmell's excitement increased as the wish process continued. "She would tell everyone that spoke to her about her new room," her mother said. Carmell was so excited to see her room and made sure to call her wish granters Sue and Jared frequently to check on the progress.

Her wish was granted when Make-A-Wish partnered with designer Cynthia Smith, who is the owner of CCS Design Studio, Inc. in Chicago. Cynthia Smith and Make-A-Wish volunteers planned every detail of the rooms design from construction to completion.

"Her eyes were as big as saucers when she saw her room," her mother said. "She couldn't stop jumping up and down." Carmell's room was designed with the Princess and the Frog theme in mind.  Carmell now has a room that fits her every need.

Carmell spends every minute of her free time in her princess room. Her mother says every day she comes home from school and goes straight to her room. This little princess is very protective of her new room. Her mother says no one is allowed in her room when she isn't home. "She gets really bossy now when it comes to her room," her mother said.
